Brighter communities: City teams carry out electricity upgrades in Westridge

The City’s maintenance and investment into the upgrading of electricity infrastructure is taking place across the city with more than R4 billion earmarked as part of the City’s new budget 2024/25 over the next three years. This week, investment took place in Westridge, Mitchells Plain where the community will benefit from an electricity transformer upgrade.
‘This week we visited Westridge, Mitchells Plain where critical maintenance to an area transformer took place – this enables reliable supply to our Westridge community. Our R4 billion investment underscores the City’s commitment to safer and brighter communities, while also unlocking economic potential.
‘Our programme is critical as it enhances the reliability of our infrastructure so that we reduce electricity outages and improve on the overall stability of our supply. Maintenance and upgrades also ensures that our infrastructure is capable of withstanding severe weather conditions as far as possible. The biggest threat to our efforts across the Metro and area South in particular, but also across the metro, is the repeated theft, vandalism and illegal connections that are leaving communities in the dark, often just days after the City has fixed the damage. With our appointed security and Energy Safety Teams, we are working hard to tackle this challenge but ask our residents to help protect their power. Let’s ACT together for safer and brighter communities,’ said the Mayoral Committee Member for Energy, Alderman Xanthea Limberg.
Report electricity infrastructure theft and vandalism
The City urges residents to report incidents of electricity infrastructure theft and vandalism. Theft and vandalism also undermines the City’s efforts to restore power to residents timeously where outages occur.
